I've been reading up on the topic of "hijacking threads" and spontaneous humor vs the need to keep a conversation on track. I can really see the dilemma.

Were any solutions ever brainstormed? I just hijacked a thread with meaningless banter... mea culpa... I couldn't resist.

How about.... if a thread is inactive for what? 24 hours? 48 hours? then it's a free-for-all? If it's inactive for a certain amount of time, it will disappear of the radar screen anyway. Any suggestions / rules / policies ?

I don't think thats a good idea, a lot of information is in older posts and it would be a shame if this information got lost in banter.

Generally, I don't feel so strongly against banter as long as:
- it isn't obscene
- it doesn't go for 5 posts in a row
- it actually makes me laugh :)

I agree that a happy medium has to be kept where there is useful information while still being able to inject humour in places as well.

A good rule of thumb would be to try to include something relevant in any posts you make - not always easy but it keeps you thinking.

You could always start new threads in Open Discussion if something is really bursting to come out (something that people are doing anyway).

My rule of thumb is to let it ride until such time as it seems to be getting carried away. For the most part people have learned to use good sense. I guess you could say the cardinal rule is to do unto other's threads as you would have them do unto yours. If everybody shows respect for the work of others, as they usually do, then there is no problem. In the last six months I've had to say something only once or twice.

The bigger issue has not been banter so much as just utterly pointless threads and posts, that has mostly resolved itself also.

You've now hijacked a thread about pointless banter with pointless banter.
