Trying to study for my finals tomorrow. :frustrate As you know ... when it comes to math, 1 + 1 doesn't always equals 2. If anyone looks through here that's good with math ... PLEEEEEEEEEASE HELLLLLLLLLP MEEEEE!
This table has it figured, but I'm left with figuring the last two. Can you please explain, as you would to a little kid (7-10), so I'll understand, how they came up with the percentages.

A Two-Year Comparison of Diesel Engine Sales

City / Total Sales 2000 & 2002 / Percent of
Increased/Decrease

Atlanta /1,305 / 2,360 / 80.8
Chicago /1,960 / 3,450 / 76.0
Detroit / 1,530 / 1,250 / -18.3

Foreeeeeeeeeever in your debt!

You take the new and divide it by the old to give:

(2,360/1,305) = 1.808

And then multiply by 100 to convert to %:

1.808 * 100 = 180.8 %

That means that 2,360 is the same as 1,305 (100%) + 80.8% of 1,305.

Same for all of the others.

HTH :)

Atlanta had an increase from 1,305 to 2,360... so you subtract 2,360 and 1,305 to get 1,055 (the amount of increase). Take the 1,055 (the total increase) and divide it by 1,305. Move the decimal point over two and you get the answer.

Oh boy I really wish I could help you. I still get nightmares about finals.
And... I flunked math!

Do not ask me to explain it, but here's what I was able to come up with:

Take the second number and divide it by the first
2360 divided by 1,350 = 1.808
3450 divided by 1960 = 1.76
Note the decimals after 1 correspond to the percentages you listed
1530 divided by 1250 = 0.82 but that happens to be 18 below 1.

Euhmmm... I reserve all rights to be totally wrong about this. Good luck!

Thanks all! :lovestruc

CB, I understood you best, 'cause you explained as you would to a kid. Thanks! Now, can you explain it the same way for how they came up with a negative -18.3? :frustrate

CptKipling
05-05-2005, 05:44 PM
Because its a decrease.

Use CB's method.

Edit:

To explain it using the other method...

If you follow the same rules as before (new divided by old) you get

0.817*100=81.7

Now, because you can see from the numbers that it's a decrease (new is less than old), if you do 81.7 - 100 (like you did in my first post with 180.8 - 100 to give 80.8), you end up with the right answer.

Detroit / 1,530 / 1,250 / -18.3

Detroit had a decrese 1,250 - 1,530 = -280
-280 divided by 1,530 = -0.183
move the decimal over two to get your answer

Mobes ,

The first figure is presumably the year 2000 figure, so that's the number that you are figuring the percentage change against.

Find the difference between the 2000 and 2002 figures by subtracting the smaller one from the larger one.

Divide THAT DIFFERENCE by the year 2000 number. That's the percent of change.

If the 2002 figure is greater than the 2000 figure it's a positive change.
If the 2002 figure is LESS than the 2000 figure, then it's a negative change.

Example:
Atlanta -
2,360 - 1,305 = 1055
1,055 / 1,305 = .808429(etc.)
That rounds to 80.8%

Just remember to calculate against the year 2000 figure whether or not it's the larger or smaller of the two figures.
And then check which IS larger to see if it was a positive or negative change.

O :)

Then how did the come up with a negative -18.3? :frustrate

1530 divided by 1250 = 0.817

That's in my (tentative) theory is 18.3 below one.
Besides if they sold 1530 in 2000 and only 1250 in 2002, you know it's negative.

I can't really explain it, just come up with a trick to answer correctly tomorrow.

Divide second by first.
If above 1 - percentage is after decimal
If below 1, percentage is what you need to get to 1.

Naughtie, they both work with your method, see my edit.

OKAY ... I'm still lost, but ...

2000 2002
1,640 1320 = -19.5 ?

CptKipling
05-05-2005, 06:07 PM
1320 divided by 1640 = .805 (about that anyway)

.805 * 100 to convert to % gives you 80.5

Then take away 100 to find the % difference, -19.5

You can check by (kinda) going backwards:

19.5 divided by 100 = 0.195

0.195 * old number (1,640) = 319.8 which is about the difference between 2000 and 2002.

Capitano, if that means the -19.5 is right ... I got it! Thanks Fishy & the rest of L-S's outstanding members!

I like the whatever you need to get to 1! Even Mobley can understand that way!

P.S. Whoever came up with math sucks!:run:

I vote that as a correct!

Still reserving all rights to be wrong, of course!

Mobes,

I didn't even check it at first! But it is right 'cos I did check it with a calc when I was "(kinda) going backwards".

Thanks all, for all of your help ... 96 on that final!!!:whip: Ugly thing is ... it has nothing to do with math, just a table which needed to be completed by finding the percentages for two items! :frustrate

Needless to say, I sat with my chest stuck out knowing how to fingure out the answer using the FISH METHOD.:drunk:

 Thankya! Thankya! Thankya!
