Bush supporters and most Republicans will be deeply and understandably offended by that mostly accurate and correct article. I also used to hate it when "left-wingers" would say extreme stuff about Reagan back in the day. It seems taboo to say that about a sitting president (duly elected or not).

Bush hasn't gassed his own people (though ask Iraqis if they care about this distinction), proclaimed a master race (though neocons, theocrats and the rich elite seek singular, permanent rule), or illegally taken over as many countries as Hitler (only one isn't so bad is it?). He's not killing all dissenters in his own party (though actively supressing dissent in myriad, ingenious ways). So it wouldn't be accurate to say Bush is personally just like Hitler, who was an accomplished master at consolidating power.

But yeah, the neocon movement definitely smacks of fascism in so many ways -- the parallels are stunning -- that it is fair to call it a kind of fascism; one that hasn't completely taken hold of our culture yet. You just have to look at it objectively.

It's extremely interesting from an intellectual (historical, political) standpoint that such a comparison is even possible in this country.

BTW, here's the original Fox "news" article:

And here are a couple of remarkable, topical Byrd speeches from just before the Iraq war. They helped me understand where he's coming from:

It's too bad the octegenarian has such a history of racism. He resigned his KKK membership in 1942, and filibustered civil rights legislation in the 60's. (Then again, the pope was in the Hitler Youth.) Ironically, he's now often called the "Conscience of the Senate". I guess redemption is possible.
