True Budo is practiced not to destroy an enemy, it must make him, or his own will, gladly lose his spirit (seishin) to oppose you.

I studied in California for a year, then moved to Japan where I studied from the crack of dawn in an unheated dojo for 3 hours every day including weekends for the most part. John Stevens was my sensei and I finally got my nidan and teaching certificate before I came back. I also studied with the legendary (4 times all-Japan full-contact karate champion) Osada Sensei nights until I got married, and spent a month studying Muay Thai on an island in South Thailand.
